Pick the product before you start

A Guilford County background check can mean at least three different things: a certified search of Guilford court records, a self-service court-record search, or a fingerprint-based review of your North Carolina criminal-history record. The correct route depends on who requested the check and whether they need certification, county-only coverage, statewide coverage, or fingerprints.

Get a certified Guilford County court search through the clerk

The North Carolina Judicial Branch says a certified criminal record search for yourself or another person can be requested from the Clerk of Superior Court in a single county using form AOC-CR-314. The published fee is $25. This is expressly a one-county search, so a Guilford certificate should not be described as a statewide North Carolina check.

For mail submissions, the Judicial Branch lists money order or certified check; in person it lists credit card, cash, money order or certified check. Confirm the Guilford clerk location and current counter arrangements before traveling.

A free self-service search is not the same product

The Judicial Branch also describes self-service, non-certified background searches using public-access computers at courthouses. Those searches can be useful for checking names and locating cases, but they do not turn a screen or emailed result into a certified clerk search.

Fingerprinting is a collection service, not the finished report

Guilford County Sheriff fingerprinting can be part of a background-check process, but the fingerprint appointment itself does not create the final criminal-history response. The agency that requested the fingerprints, or the authorized state/federal repository, determines what search is run and where the result goes.

   Use the Guilford Sheriff service only when its format fits the requesting process.

   Do not ask the fingerprint technician to certify a background result they do not issue.

Use SBI Right to Review for your own North Carolina repository record

For your own fingerprint-based North Carolina criminal history, the SBI offers a Right to Review. The current published fee is $14; the SBI describes it as an NC-only fingerprint-based check for the individual. It is submitted by mail and is different from the Guilford clerk’s name-based county court search.

The SBI FAQ says processing can take up to 20 business days from receipt and that results are mailed. If your purpose is employment or licensing, follow the agency’s authorized process instead of substituting a personal Right to Review unless that agency accepts it.

Use stronger identifiers and read no-hit results narrowly

Names alone can match the wrong person or miss a record recorded under another name. Use the full legal name, date of birth, and any case number supplied by the official process. A “no record” or no-hit response only speaks to the system, identifiers, scope and access rules of that search; it does not establish that no criminal event exists anywhere.

Challenge repository errors through the repository

If your own SBI Right to Review result contains information you believe is wrong, the SBI directs people who have received their results to submit its Written Exception process. For a court-docket error, contact the clerk that maintains the case. Keeping the court and repository correction paths separate avoids sending a correction request to an office that does not own the disputed data.
